In some organizations, there are managers that are politically placed (due to who they know and are friends with). Others are placed based on merit and qualification. Those that are the former tend to not work as hard, don't know what they are truly doing even though they act like they are the expert on everything, are not as organized, not successful at motivating their team, and do not produce results as they should to meet organizational goals. So why are these people in position and with this situation, how long do they stay?
The managers that are in their positions because they are qualified and truly want to make a difference and produce successful outcomes, tend to be the ones that will do just that. They know what to do and how to operate their business. Yes, they truly are an expert. They understand that in order to have employees perform well that motivation strategies are required as well as providing clear direction and sound guidance. These managers know that communication is key and they are willing to roll their sleeves up and get in the trenches with employees to meet department or organizational goals. Such managers are involved and believe they have to contribute to the bottom line as well.
Which type of manager do you want? The one who will end up not working hard thus making you work harder or the one who understands the expectations of his or her employees and is willing to do all they can to see you succeed?
What type of manager will you be?
I look forward to your comments.
It is well noticed that many people now and days receive managerial duties based on their connections and not their intellectualism. The people that are hired based on connections, majority of the time are lazy and under qualified. They sometimes take advantage of their opportunities. The people who are qualified and who are hired based on their potential are the truly successful ones. Personally, I would want a manager who is well known for the right reasons such as being hired based on the skills and talents that he/ she has. With the skills my manger have, I know i can become somebody that is well motivated and successful. I will be the real expert manager, if i have to be that , when i grow older!
ReplyDeleteFrom experience, I can contest that all managers are not the experts in their fields. As stated in the blog, some are strategically place because of who they know. Others have the qualifications to do the tasks at hand and tend to perform better at them. I have manage two different companies. The first of them is a job i feel I was very much qualified to manage. I worked within the company gradually moving up until I receive the promotion I had worked hard for. The second company I worked for just threw my in a managerial position based on what I had done for the first company and because I had the cosign of a current respected manager. There where times when I felt as if other employees should have been promoted rather than bringing in new manager such as myself. This did not stop me from being a great manager because I was willing to learn with my employees and not make them feel as if I was a better fit than anyone of them.
ReplyDeleteThe type of manager i would want as stated in the blog is the one who is willing and understanding. People have to understand that a manager position doesnt mean there better than the next person , maybe they just qualify for that spot.I dont like for a person to try to put all the work on me or any one else just because they position is a higher rank than someone elses. I would be that type of manager that works with my workers and help them so one day they could move to a higher position and somethings they may have to teach me so we all could work together buti might not no everything and they willbe there to help me. At the same time as a manger you have to stay on the workers sometimes because they start to think that yall are so cool and that they can run over you . (:
ReplyDeleteThe manager that will get in and help is a good manager one who wants to see me succeed and possibly be a manager myself. I was once told "i may be a master but i am still a student" so there is always space for learning and improvement as far as being raised to manager because of social status well thats unfortunate and i dont have much to say on this post
ReplyDeleteUnfortunately in our society there is still a lot of people who are assigned superior duties based on political decisions rather than on the merit that a person has achieved in his/her life. Managers should be persons who totally understand the environment of the workplace and motivate the employees to work hard along him/her. If I ever become a manager I will prepare myself to learn how to be a manager that truly carries his job accordingly and motivates employees in order to achieve the business' goals.
ReplyDeleteI have more experience as a first-line manager and middle managers area. As I move up in senior Management level, I work with some financial decision. But before getting experience in these areas, I worked for companies prior that had some poor management skills. It was a revolving door, people coming, people going. But that didn’t stop me from working there, I was able to observe firsthand how not to follow that manager style. It made me a better decision maker as a manager at all levels. I understand thru my experiences at higher levels of management there are times you will have to understand case by case the needs of the employees/managers(example child care), the department(s) (example deadlines of projects) and meet organizational goals (financially safe decision that will only cut the fat out of a budget not the employee) . I want to be the best manager, which companies and employees/managers will want to hire and keep.
ReplyDeleteIf I had to the chance to be a manager, I would be the one that exceed the expectations of the employees and will do whatever it takes to succeed. The manager is supposed to be the one person that sets the tone for any franchise or company. I would do anything to succeed for the employees so that they can feel comfortable working in their environment and to improve the company and business to the next level. Also as a manager, I would not be stubborn to the point where I wont listen to any advice from my employees and will not listen to criticism from other people on my job.
ReplyDeleteWorking in the school system in Richmond County for a few years before returning to school at Paine I noticed a lot of that going on. Promotions taking place because of who they know or who their parents are or were. Just because their parents were a good educator or principal does mean they are. I would want a manager that is going to be effective and productive and someone who is a motivator of his or her employees to do the same.
ReplyDeleteI would want a manager who understands the expectations of me as an employee and is willing to do all they can to see me succeed. When I become a manger someday I will hire employees based on their Skills and Qualifications not based on who I know or who I "like". I will be fair to each and every employee.

ReplyDeleteI definitely desire to work for a qualified manager that will motivate and go to the extreme to ensure that I fulfill the requirements of my position. This type of manager will maximize the performance of not only my work but the work of all who are under his or her authority. I would indeed try to be the same type of manager.
ReplyDeleteI can say that in a lot of high end professional companies people are given manageral positions through reference letter (people they know) and I find it to be counterproductive and unfair to those who are working hard as well as inquiring that intellectual knowledge to gain the position they want in a company. Those who are hired based on who they know then rely on other people to do their work for them so that they can keep that position which often doesn't last long, because those people get tired of doing work that they shouldn't be forced to do.Out of respect for myself as well as my own personal business ethics I would only work for a qualified manager, because then that gives me a sense of security. Knowing that my manager has had to go through all that I have had to in order to get the position in which I work. It also, makes me feel as though I have a foundation of moral support, meaning if I needed help or had question on how to do my job well I can easily ask. Working is a wonderful learning experience and when you have a positive relationship and level of understanding , it makes it easier to accomplish goals as a WHOLE! Everything I look for in a manager, I would honestly expect even more from myself if I was to become a manager.
ReplyDeleteI want the manager that has worked in order to achieve their position. This means that they know what has to be done not just on their level but on the levels below them and thus pay more attention to what they must do. These types of managers would also provide learning opportunities constantly and by just watching their work ethics and management tactics, I would be able to benefit.
ReplyDeleteI want to be the type of manager that knows what I am doing. Thought it sounds good to just achieve that position based on political status, etc. I prefer to have motivation and respect for my work instead of just being placed somewhere.
I want a manager that is going to be a good example and teach me so that I can be the best employee for the company. If they are doing their best then I will want to do mine. I have worked for both types of managers. I can honestly say that what my manager was producing I was producing. If they worked hard I worked hard because I did not want to disappoint them, but when they were relaxed I became the same way and then got upset when they yelled at me for not doing a good job. I as well as others would complain about them and say and think "If they aren't why should I?" It seems that in certain situations a person is hired because of their connections which tends to not always be a good thing. People think that because they are friends with the manager or owner they can do whatever they want which in turn affects the employees. Having a good manager to work for will bring the best out in me and I feel others. I hope to be a good example to the people I work with. I want to be a leader that my employees can look up too and want to be better for the company.
