Diversity is an essential thing to learning and growth for all organizations. However, depending on the diverse, or lack there of, structure of top leadership of organizations, diversity may not be seen as a big issue. As we look at employee frameworks of companies, especially those catering to diverse markets, some are great at ensuring proper representation while others are not. Those of the top echelon of firms tend to want to continue with the tradition of the similar-to-me perspective when hiring and will hire those that look like them (especially when their skills are the same to other diverse candidates; they will get that extra push due to racial and gender similarities).
In Caucasian top heavy companies, you will see more Caucasians employed. The same goes for African-American top heavy firms. Most of the employees will also be African-American. Sometimes companies look at the customers in which they serve and will determine who will be employed to make sure that there is proper understanding and engagement between employees and customers.
What is your opinion on diversity with employee structures and how should diversity be determined? Based on the similar-to-me affect or customer orientation? Or should diversity not be a concern and people only be hired base on qualifications (even when this will make an organization diverse in one racial or gender group than other)?
When it comes to diversity within a company, I am all for it, for as long as it is fair. I don't believe in hiring someone just because they are different than most - especially if they really are not qualified. If a company is going to be diverse, then I believe they should go about it fairly and not just hire someone because of their diversity but rather their skills.
ReplyDeleteI believe that a company has the right to hire who they want. Everyone is out to make money. Lets say that there is a company that is selling perfume. Are they going to hire a man to sell that perfume? No. Or how about a company that is trying to sell things that only African-American's use like certain hair products. Are they going to have a Caucasian on their labels? No. Or how about a product that usually only Caucasian's wear. Are they going to ask an Asian or an African-American to go to meetings to sell the product? No. They are going to hire who represents their product. It makes sense. Now if a company does not care and is selling to every diverse group then they should hire the person who best fits they qualifications for the job.
ReplyDeleteI personally believe that diversity is a good thing.Diversity is about learning from others who are not the same, and about creating workplace environments and practices that encourage learning from others and capture the advantage of diverse perspectives. While diversity is a good thing it is still importnt to make sure the person has the skills to do the job hired for. I believe that depending on the audience that your business is geared toward should also play a role in who works there also.
ReplyDeleteDiversity in the workplace is important and could also be very useful in many ways. I do agree that when a company is trying to attract a specific group with a product, they have no choice but to stick to that particular group in order to make sales. Having diversity in the workplace is the right and fair thing to consider. When it comes to hiring individuals, qualifications should play an important role in the hiring process no matter ones racial or gender group. When it comes to selecting individuals on the job to work on specific projects to attract certain people, then I think racial and gender groups should be considered for effectiveness. We all learn from each other each and every day and diversity plays a major role in this.
ReplyDeleteBelieving that diversity plays a big role in a company I do believe qualifications stand out more in completing projects effectively. Diversity gives others a chance but also gives the company the chance to push forward and expand their sales. When that company decides to target a specific group, the company should place a group in whch can relate to the specific needs. Not saying all one race either because on a team you tend to feed off others ideas. I agree with Laurna, in which diversity plays a major role and its expanding every day.
ReplyDeleteI beleive if a person has the skills and knowledge to do the task, by all means hire them. Automically, companies hire people who are of the same group as them. I don't think that hiring someone because of their race, skin color, bodily odor, religion or their personal life should have an affect on who they hire. We're all humans and we deserve to be treated with reapect and fairness. Diversity isn't always the key to success in a company. It's what they bring to the table and how effective they are at getting the job done. Companies should want to hire people that can help them succeed their goals and not pass judgement on people of different enthicity. They never know what they recieve may be beneficial to the company, until things starts to look really bad for them.
ReplyDeleteDiversity can make a better company, a stronger compnay, by bringing fresh ideas, perspectives, experience and life responsibilities, which creates a collaborative workplace. Diversity is also a plus to any company when targeting a specfic group.
ReplyDeleteI feel that in order for any business to become successful, they must first start within their company. Meaning such hiring not only one specific group of people base on their race but people with all different background. Diversity, in my opinion, shouldn't be a issue because we live in a very diverse world now. Companies shouldn't hire people base on "similar-to-me" aspect nor "customer orientation" because anyone could fit into those two categories but will they be successful at their job is another story. For example, when I go grocery shopping on the weekend at certain Asian supermarket the employees there are great help because they're able to answer my questions but I noticed that when someone who doesn't speak the same language, the employee have a difficult time answering them. Situation like that shouldn't even happen in the first place if the market had extend their hiring to other racial groups. I believe that as long as the company can work in harmonious interning than it can reflex that on the outside. Happy employees equal happy customers.
ReplyDeleteFor me diversity is something that should be celebrated. We are a nation of immigrants. Most of our ancestry came from Europe, Asia, or Latin America. Some of our ancestry is also from Africa. Diversity makes us better people. To accept people who are different from us. Yet we are all the same human. In the spiritual sense we are all created by one Creator. Yet from each of the jobs I've had only one have I seen more of a different race than of my own. Yet we all got along. We were all there to work and get paid for doing it.
ReplyDeleteWorking in a diverse field can either benefit you as a person or either be a negative choice. People all around do certain things different from the way you were once taught or either showed. I once worked at a ups which is a pretty diverse place. Watching all my employees work and the way they built there walls helped me build my wall better stronger and tighter. They help filled in were I had my soft spots at even though I became a better loader they still helped. Diversity can help certain people to learn And others can become frustrated and argue depending on a persons self control
ReplyDeleteDiversity is good EVERYWHERE but some individuals cannot deal either because they don't want to or because they have never been taught to which is bad. Anywhere in the world you go there is a variety of human beings, black, white, Asian, Hispanic, and so on. I was born in a country of many races. We all got along black, Portuguese, Chinese, amerindian, white. We all grew up in the same street house. Growing up I had one black friend four Indian friends and one half black half Indian friend we went to each other's homes we n we never turned our noses up at each other or did we get angry and name called anyone. Today people just look at each other and say without thinking how they would feel if they were in those shoes. I'm one for fairness all around regardless of age race gender religion it just doesn't matter that s why I get so upset at individuals who discriminate against others that don't look like them it's not right it's not fair it's not nice I feel they should be punished to the extent of the law as if they committed a murder cause in a sense they killed someone's inner feelings.'
